CCR Book Club - September 15, 2016

Start reading now for the CCR Book Club's September discussion! The book chosen by group members is a hefty biography titled "The Pike: Gabriele d'Annunzio – Poet, Seducer & Preacher of War" by Lucy Hughes-Hallett.

Learning about the life of celebrated Italian author Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938) will be of interest to anyone living in Rome, where d'Annunzio spent many creative years, and more generally to anyone fascinated with or bemused by Italian history. As one Guardian reviewer noted, d'Annunzio was a "poet and lothario who seduced Italy to wartime slaughter with his rhetoric, scandalised Europe with his writing and set up his own city state in a forerunner of fascism..." and, perhaps of great interest to present readers, this self-promoter was truly a "a pioneer of modern celebrity culture."
